Pencil Review – PILOT G2
For the first pen and pencil review, I’m starting with one of my favorite brands – PILOT. I’ve been a fan of the G2 INK for years. So you’d think I’d LOVE the G2 pencil. Not so much. There’s something about the barrel that doesn’t do it for me. In fact, it’s pretty much the same for the pen. I tend to scavenge the ink from the G2s and put them in other barrels, that doesn’t matter so much with the pencil. A lot of the lead is the same regardless of the barrel.
PILOT is known for good quality work, don’t get me wrong. But the G2 mechanical pencil is just…okay. The eraser is bigger than a lot of traditional mechanical pencils, but that’s about it. The one thing it does have going for it- at least for me – is that it’s .5MM. I’m not a fan of .7MM lead – it’s too thick. I like smaller, more precise line of .5MM lead (just as I LOVE the .38MM and .5MM rollerball points). Which means, the PILOT Q7 and CENTER OF GRAVITY are out – they ONLY come in .7MM.
I was recently given a PILOT DR. GRIP LTD. It’s .5MM and for long use (like writing hours on end), it is a comfortable pencil. The barrel is wide and cushioned without being TOO squishy. Now if only they made ALL their pencils in .5MM lead diameters… And why don’t they? Hmmm

My favorite pencil is “Pilot Vanishing Point Mechanical Pencil”. I don’t use them very often, but being able to completely retract the point is nice.
Yeah, I like completely retractable points on mechanical pencils as well. I’m not gentle on writing instruments, I like the more delicate parts to have protection.
