[Pen/Pencil Review] Dong-A Miffy 0.5mm Blue Black Ink

Posted by reudaly on May 5, 2014 in Review, writing instruments |

So I bought this pen for the giggle factor. Somewhere inside all of us is a 12-year-old who finds low brow humor in stuff. So, yes, in honor of the inner 12-year-old, I had to buy the Dong-A Miffy pen from JetPens. This is the Dong-A Miffy blue-black gel ink in a roller ball stick pen. It’s also touted as a scented ink.

The Miffy (because the more I type the whole name the more I giggle) is actually decent stick pen. It’s about 5.75″ capped and about 6.25″ with the cap posted. It’s light but has good balance. And the cap posts very securely. The barrel is clear with bunnies and strawberries appliquéd on it. The clip and end cap are the color of the ink. It feels a bit thinner in diameter than say a Pentel Hybrid, but it’s still pretty comfortable.

The ink is dark and has a good line for 0.5mm. This is a needle point rollerball, but the needle point is a solid stainless steel tip so it doesn’t feel like it’s going to bend. Because it is a gel in, on good paper, there’s some drying time or it will smear. It does say it’s a scented ink, but I don’t smell anything (but that could be a product of allergy season). I passed it on to a colleague, she didn’t smell anything either, but that’s fine by me. I don’t like strong scents.

And for a stick pen only available through an importer like JetPens – it’s not that expensive. It’s in line with what a pen like this should be.

The numbers:

1. How does it work?1 – It works pretty well. It’s an inexpensive plastic stick pen with a decent tip and smooth ink.
2. Grip and feel0.5 – It’s molded plastic. There’s nothing cushiony. It might be a bit long for some people. It will probably get tiring if you have a tight grip.
3. Material1 – It is what it is. A plastic stick pen. It’s got a decent balance
4. Overall Design0.5 – It’s relatively juvenile with the appliqués. There’s no smell to the scented ink. There’s very little in the way of ergonomic
5. Price Point1 – It’s reasonably cheap. These are $1.10 on Jetpens.com and come in a wide array of colors. For a fun giggle, it’s not that much of an investment.

That’s 4 of 5 bronze pencils.
