[Spotlight Post] Amanda Wyss
On Wednesday I talked about the business side of Dallas Comic Con. I tried to be clear that it was never, ever about the people. I love the people involved with Dallas Comic Con. And though I try not to flaunt it, I do enjoy meeting the celebrities because the ones I meet are generally the ones who’ve influenced me as a writer.
Since I know in some circumstances I can be an overly enthusiastic fangirl, I do try to limit my time with the ones I enjoy so I don’t become THAT fangirl. One of those celebrities this go around was Amanda Wyss. Amanda is one of those actresses you’ve seen but may not know. She was a plot point character in one of my all time favorite movies, Silverado. That’s where I first saw her – not A Nightmare on Elm Street or Fast Times at Ridgemont High (though those are iconic films) – but a totally underappreciated Western. She also played a short, recurring character as a psycho-killer groupie in CSI that led to Laurence Fishburne’s character’s departure.
Ask a sampling of people to name an actress playing a TV or Movie character named “Phoebe” and most of the responses will be Lisa Kudrow from Friends or Alyssa Milano from Charmed. I think of Amanda Wyss. She was the only celebrity at Comic Con I made a point of going to meet – the fact I got to exchange a few sentences with MICHAEL DORN, that was bonus points.
Amanda Wyss is completely adorable. That’s not a word one normally uses to describe a grown adult and a talented professional, but it totally fits HER. She was not only beyond pleasant to anyone who came up to the table, she genuinely seemed interested in people and their stories. She remembered our minor Twitter exchange, and let me ply her with cookies. And I did ask her to sign my Silverado DVD – which Jimmy and I then watched while eating pizza on Sunday night after it was all over.
She shot an episode of Major Crimes for TNT this week. When it airs you should watch it. She’s a lovely and talented woman who can use all the support you can give her. She is also an ambassador for Project Happiness, which is a non-profit organization that helps create and promote happiness through arts, media, and education through neuroscience, psychology, and desire and help spread that happiness to others. After meeting Amanda, I can see where she is a good fit for this organization, she truly is a strong, intelligent, and happy person – and you can’t help but be caught up in her energy.
Go… watch Silverado if you’ve never seen it. Check out http://projecthappiness.org/. And watch Major Crimes when it airs this summer. And no, I didn’t get pictures with Amanda. I didn’t think of it because I was trying to NOT be that fan, and I got her to eat cookies instead – and she signed my DVD…

I have had a crush on Amanda since I first saw her in My Mother’s Secret Life, and was so pleased when she had roles in Highlander in which she was perfectly cast. I loved Silverado and have watched it many times. I wish she had had Linda Hunt’s role. I believe she would have been perfect and of course, would have had more lines.
If I see her name in a cast, I would never miss seeing a movie or TV episode.I am glad she is engaging but not at all surprised. I would love to meet her some day.
