[Pen/Pencil Review] The Pentel Enger-Gel 1.0mm Stick – Black Ink
This is yet another Pentel, because it was already photographed. I need to 1) get organized to find out what still needs reviewing, and 2) take some further pictures. But this one is another of the Ener-Gel line. The Ener-Gel stick pen with liquid gel ink in black with a 1.0mm tip from the giant box of goodness they sent me way back when.
This one is for those who do like big, bold lines. I’m not that person. I’ve made my love of fine/ultra fine points very clear. But I can’t just review the pens I love, I have to think of others. The Pentel Ener-Gel stick is about 5.5″ long capped and about 6.25″ with the post capped. The cap posts securely and you can hear it with a click, and it takes a good pull to get it off.
The charcoal gray/black barrel has some smoky transparency to it, but you can’t see the ink supply. It has a rubber grip that gives it some ergonomics. Pentel has done a good attempt to round off all the edges to keep edges from digging into fingers. There are a couple, but for the most part, it’s the comfortable. It’s part of the Recycology line.
Okay, so it’s liquid gel ink. The website there’s no smears, smudges, or globs, and yeah, I don’t buy it. With that big of a line, and with a wet ink… I know I’ve dragged my hand through the ink. With the wide point, there’s more ink and longer drying time – especially on good paper.
The numbers:
1. How does it work? – 0.5 It’s decent. No frills. The ink is dark and the roller smooth. There’s smearing because there’s more ink to deal with and takes longer to dry.
2. Grip and feel – 1 – It’s an inexpensive, plastic, no frills pen. It has a grip that’s pretty comfortable. The length and balance are good for what it is.
3. Material – 1 It’s recycled plastic, but it has a good mechanism and good ink. This one is refillable
4. Overall Design – 1 -It’s a basic retractable liquid gel ink pen. It’s refillable or disposable. It is what it is. Though, if you like bold points, you’ll probably like this one.
5. Price Point – 0.5 – These look like they’re running about $2.50. For me, that’s a little much for a pen like this, even made from recycled content and potentially refillable.
