[Spotlight Post] Random Spotlight Driveby

I’m trying to figure out a Spotlight for this week, but Thursday derailed me a little bit. So this is going to be a bit wibbledy.

Queen Anne's Lace on Stage

Queen Anne’s Lace on Stage

We start working a booth at Scarborough on Saturday – and part of me thinks I should be spotlighting all the amazingly talented and hardworking actors, vendors, and crew. I did that last year or the year before, but it bears repeating. If you’re in the Dallas/Fort Worth area – or can get to the D/FW area – this is an awesome experience. This is a part time job for almost all involved – so their effort is even more amazing. I am not required to stay in character and accent. They are.

I could talk about the book I’m reading – which is Heat Rises by “Richard Castle”. But it feels weird to review a completely fictional book written by a completely fictional person. Yes, I know that someone actually had to write it. And whoever wrote it is truly attached to the show because I hear the show character voices (especially Kate Beckett/Stana Katic in the Nikki Heat character). They’re silly fun because, dude, it’s the most bizarre form of media tie-in/fan fic that’s even been perpetrated. That’s why I love it. And it kinda follows what happens in the series.

Or … I could talk about the crazy bad/sad stuff that came down today. Dave Farland announced his son had a massive ski accident. The son may or may not survive. This was just hours before Roger Ebert’s passing hit the news. Sucky day there. I pray for peace and strength for both families.

But what has derailed me most is the fact that I may have to pull a story from a publication. I was so excited to find a home for this particular story – it’s a hard sell. But…as we’re seeing with Night Shade Books and their potential sale – the concern over good contracts effects us all. I’m debating a contract that I see before me – the handle toward my hand – and the proposed “Fix” also doesn’t sit well with me. It’s not that I’m “greedy” or that I think all publishers are out to “get” me – I love my contracts with Yard Dog Press. They’re clear and fair and cool. This contract… yeah, not so much. And I hate having to say, “Yeah, thanks but no.” But I shall have to do just that, professionally, and with great tact. Whee.
More Fun Improv at Scarborough
Repeat after me… It’s okay to say “no”. It’s okay to say “no”. It’s okay to say “no”. But not okay to miss out on Scarborough Renaissance Festival. Good music. Great shows. Awesome experience. Come buy some art and see some class-act royalty.
