[Pen/Pencil Review] The Year of the Dragon Sherpa Fountain Pen Insert
This is a quick and dirty pen blog – because it’s been that kind of Monday. It’s a follow up to the Sharpie Sherpa post – I did get the fountain pen insert from Paradise Pen Company. So I could use the Year of the Dragon Sherpa. I’m not as afraid of messing it up now. I’ve really been using the heck out of the thing.
I really like having the fountain pen insert in the thing. The insert is long enough for the big international cartridges, or to have a regular cartridge with a spare. Which is good, because with all the layers, you can’t easily check your ink level, I’ve run it out a couple of times.
It’s was a good investment, and a fantastic compromise between really, really wanting to use this Sherpa and wanting to keep using the Stainless Steel ones. So, when it comes to this, I’m stoked.
The Numbers.
1. How does it work? – 1 – The insert is great. It might even make a decent pen on it’s own. It has smooth nib and a good length.
2. Look and feel – 0.5 – I wish I could give a 0.75 – because the grip is a bit thick for my taste but it has a good weight and balance. And there’s a bit of spring to the fountain pen insert.
3. Material – 1 It’s enameled metal, probably stainless steel, but I don’t know for sure. It feels solid and rugged. The insert is mostly plastic with probably stainless steel nib – maybe iridium.
4. Overall Design – 1 – It’s a well-put together idea. Now that I have the fountain pen refill, I use this sucker ALL. THE. TIME. It’s pretty darned comfortable.
5. Price Point – 1 – I like this pen cover enough that I’m not going to totally pan the price – this Sherpa costs about $40… NOW… the refill itself… it’s $6. Which is really, really reasonable for a refillable, solid insert.
4.5 out of 5 bronze pencils.
