[Writer Post] Conversations Among Creatives
So, here we are… a writer post kind of day, and I’m half afraid I’ve shot my proverbial blogging wad on my day job stuff. I’m nearly a week ahead on those blogs because I have some down time, and for some reason, those have come pretty easily this week. Writing topics? Not so much.
Except then stuff happens that reminds me why I do the things I do. I end up in conversations that only writers can get into with other creative types. This one happened to be over creative ways to commit murder – both means and motive – but mostly sillier and sillier ways to commit murder.
Why? Because 1) brainstorming is always more fun when it’s silly; and 2) I have at least one – if not more – projects on my plate that require a less than serious and squicky way to kill someone. And I need TO BE WORKING on fiction. Yes, I do. I have a short story due in a couple of months. I need to be working on my novel. And now these possible projects (not to mention a collaboration that’s been in process for quite the while that will descend on me again one day).
I NEED to be working. And if goofy brainstorming gets the thoughts flowing, all the better. That it was on instant messenger made me do a couple of “If Big Brother is Watching… WRITER!!!!†I’m a writer. It’s brainstorming and research for a FICTION STORY not a weird plot – well, yeah it is, but not one that’s going to acted on in way other than ink.
It’s one of the best and most surreal parts of being a fiction writer. And when it comes to this aspect of writing , CASTLE does get it right. In the early seasons, when they’d do the writer poker game? Yeah, I’ve had those conversations – usually over food or drinks at a hotel during a convention, but those happen. Just not the “playing cop†part and solving real murders – or the apartment or anything else you see on TV about writers (sadly), though it COULD happen.
So, no laurel resting – or anything else resting. I’ve had two short stories sell this year already and a novel rejection. There’s more out there for me to do.
