[Spotlight Post] The Piano Guys
I almost didn’t do today’s spotlight post. I’ve been meaning to do a technology rant. That might be next Wednesday. Mostly because it’s making me grit my teeth thinking about it, and I really need to get it out of my system before too long.
I kinda talked about ConDFW last Friday. And I thought about doing a recap for this week’s spotlight, but… as is my prerogative as a writer and a woman, I’m changing my mind. WHY? Because I’m trying to type at the same tempo as The Piano Guys concerto that was just on my iPod…and duh.

My friend, Meredith, introduced me to these guys. And I’m a sporadic classical music fan. There’s stuff I like and stuff (Bela Bartok comes to mind – plucked string sections get on my nerves). But THIS, this is some of the most amazing music I’ve ever experienced – to the point when I saw they were going to be in Dallas in April for a reasonable price (on a Monday no less), I batted my eyelashes at Jimmy. I also twisted Meredith’s arm, so she and her husband are going too.

She exposed me to them at Christmas. They are definitely “new tech†musicians. They do single pieces, record, do a video, throw it up on YouTube, then sell downloads of the songs and THEN they finally put out a CD (I think a second is coming out this spring – I need to check again, because WANT). I ran through a bunch of Christmas and regular music on YouTube, was in Barnes and Noble after Christmas – one of their pieces came on over the speakers, and I nearly mugged the woman in the music section to get it.

I love this because it’s such a mix of stuff based on piano and cello – world music, classical composers, modern music, geek references, and even religious music. Doesn’t hurt that the actual piano player, Jon Schmidt is a fellow “gingerâ€. He and Steven Sharp (cello) are crazy, crazy talented but they’re fun to watch and listen to. They’re “one of us†and if you’re one of the writers who can’t have vocal music (they have little with voices) their stuff will get you burning up the computer keys.
Seriously, check them out. Even if you don’t think you like classical music, this… It’s Lord of the Rings Meets Vivaldi Meets Mission Impossible. It’s amazing and I can’t wait to see them in person.
