[Spotlight Post] Lois McMaster Bujold and the Vorkosigan Saga
The first spotlight post of 2013… and as with the Writing Blog – I’m open for suggestions on who to feature here. If you have someone you’d like to see, feel free to send suggestions.
I did mention in the Writer Post that I took Monday “off” and read a book for “fun”. It was Lois McMaster Bujold’s Captain Vorpatril’s Alliance (and this time I’m getting the name right).
And it was a joy to read.

I’ve mentioned before that I’m a big fan of the Vorkosigan novels – and though I’m sure Miles has many more adventures ahead – I did love seeing a book about Ivan. I’ve always liked Ivan in the Miles books and am glad to see him in a leading role. And it’s a great way to keep the universe alive.

Lois McMaster Bujold is one of the writers I love – especially since it’s not a secret at all that she started in Fan Fiction – Star Trek fan fiction. Which is basically my story as well – just not as cool as hers. I didn’t have Lillian Stewart Carl as a fan fic writing partner.

She also is the Queen of the Non Traditional Hero. Miles is the polar opposite of what one tends to think of as the “Great Science Fiction Hero” – you know, like Nathan Fillion. Miles is not tall dark and ruggedly handsome. He’s short, starts out brittle, and just not what you expect. And yet… and yet…Miles Vorkosigan is one of the most dynamic, sexy, and adventurous – I think we all Mary Sue’d a bit when Miles finally met and married the girl of his dreams.

In fact, when Steven H Silver did a call for submissions to Argentus 10 for a mock news story from something in SF/F, I wrote a news piece on Miles and Ekaterin’s Winterfair wedding. It was a fun way to play close to that universe for a Hugo© Nominated Fanzine. And it allowed me to revisit a favorite fictional couple.

Now we get to know more about Miles’s cousin Ivan – and see some of his adventures. I’m looking forward to seeing where she takes her universe and if we’ll get to see more of the other supporting characters that we’ve all come to love and admire. And of course, there’s a burgeoning new generation coming. I don’t think we’ve seen the last of Barrayar…I hope.
