[Spotlight Post] The Music of John Anealio
I haven’t done a whole lot of musicians in my spotlight posts, mostly because I haven’t worked with many recently. So this week, I’m featuring John Anealio. I mentioned him in the FenCon post, but his music deserves more attention.
John Anealio isn’t a “filker”. We’re calling his music “Nerd Rock” – kind of like Bedlam Bards, he doesn’t parody existing music. His music is SF/Fandom themed original tunes. And they’re catchy. I’ve had random bits of Anealio music stuck in my head for almost a week now.
It’s only going to get worse now. I downloaded some of his music before FenCon, and actually listened to it. Now I’ve had to buy and download the new album. It’s in two different playlists on my iPhone. How can you not love a song about Wil Wheaton in a scary clown sweater on a unicorn Pegasus kitten? Not to mention he wrote what’s basically becoming a theme song for all writers I know, “I Should be Writing”. Yeah, that one pops up at weird moments.
But it’s not just that the music is good, John Anealio is also a pretty, darn cool guy. He was an awesome guest at FenCon–if you run a convention with strong music, check him out. He also teaches, podcasts, and introduced us to folks who have skills we want as panelists in upcoming FenCons. OH… and the clincher? He’s a Phineas and Ferb fan. I took him and Peter David to the airport on Sunday afternoon — all four adults in the van had a great Phineas and Ferb discussion.
So if you like to support good music and good people, please check out John Anealio’s music. The more we support artistic creators of any type, the likelier we are to have more creative product from them.

Couldn’t agree more. I get ‘Cylon Number 6’ stuck in my head all the time. 🙂
