[Writer Post] The Pre-FenCon Ramble
Oh, yeah, it’s Wednesday. Post day.
Fortunately nothing earth-shattering is happening on the publishing front this week. I don’t think I could handle it. I have managed to write SOME fiction this week in the midst of the chaos.
This is FenCon week. Therefore, very little happens that’s NOT FenCon. Right now I’m in the midst of cleaning for the dogsitter – though it’s not going to be anywhere near “Grandma Clean”, it’ll be “not embarrassing”. This is my break before sweeping, mopping, and vacuuming. Whee.
Through it all I’ve managed to do my day jobs. I start a new “Responsible Adult Day Job” on Tuesday the 25th. So my schedule will include some shifting and juggling. I’m already getting sad puppy eyes from the dogs about the thought of leaving them all day. They’ve gotten used to me working from home. And if there was a fiscally responsible way to do that right now, I’d be all over it.
Therein lies the “not so glamorous” part of being a writer, unless you get lucky and get a really good contract or start selling really, really well, you have to have some other source of income. Most of us have “Responsible Adult Day Jobs”. Which I hope and pray I don’t have to have for long, but hey, it’s good for me, right? Right. Actually, I’ll be writing product descriptions, so that’s a new skill, so it will be.
But really, right now, unless it’s FenCon prep, it’s a back burner. I’ve been on “do what needs doing and nothing else” for the last couple of weeks. I see the light at the end of my tunnel, and I don’t think it’s an on-coming train.
So, come find me at FenCon. I’ll be running around like a headless chicken making sure the GOHs are well taken care of. And Saturday, I’ll be in formal wear most of the day, so I should be easy to spot. But please cut me some slack if I seem to blow you off, it may just be that someone isn’t where they should be and I’m frantically trying to find them. That’s my job.
