[Spotlight Post] Rosemary Clement-Moore

Posted by reudaly on August 24, 2012 in Spotlight |

I’ve written about Rosemary Clement-Moore, or at least about one of her books. She deserves a revisit -as an all-around writer instead of a project specific thing. So, today, we take another look at Rosemary. Though MAYBE I should have waited since, according to Amazon, she has an omnibus of a couple of the Maggie Quinn books coming out in a couple of weeks.

Rosemary and I have been on similar paths most of our adult lives – she just has a RITA award and some darned good books under her belt. I’m working on that. We went to the same college at the same time. And I discovered about a month ago we were almost sorority sisters. I just wasn’t in the Greek mindset, but her sorority did ask me to pledge. We live in the same town (opposite sides). Even though she plays with hair color, I still claim her as a sister redhead (she has the personality…)

Rosemary does great YA paranormal fiction. I totally recommend her books to adults with teen readers or just adults who like fun, snarky, good story-telling. She skirts the borders of creepy and funny and makes it work. Her characters are people I wouldn’t mind knowing in real life, mostly because they remind me of people I know in real life–which means they’re well-rounded characters.

I would love to see more Maggie Quinn: Girl vs. Evil books. However, unless she develops the series as a transition from YA to adult (which would be AWESOME if marketing gurus were forward thinking and figured out a way to make that niche happen) there’s only a couple more years Maggie could be YA. Though, making that transition from Rosemary’s Maggie Quinn books to, say, Amber Benson’s Death’s Daughter books would be an easy step to take… but that’s me.

HOWEVER, I was thrilled to discover after devouring Texas Gothic, that we would see more of The Goodnight Family (not until 2013, but still). This is what might give Rosemary a longer series than three or four books, because this doesn’t have to be a series following one character but a series following a large and diverse family. I discussed this in a post on series vs. sequence. Having a clan to write about gives Rosemary a lot of latitude in locations, characters (if one “ages out” there’s another cousin to explore), and situations (both creepy and romantic). I can’t wait to see what she does with this family.

If you’ve not read Rosemary, check out her books. If you haven’t met her in person, make a point. She’s scheduled to be at FenCon in Dallas in September. She’s not only a good writer, she’s GOOD PEOPLE. You won’t be sorry.
