[Pen/Pencil Review] The Schneider Xtra Document 0.6mm Rollerball in Black Ink
My favorite, local Office Depot is moving to another spot in its shopping center. In anticipation of this, they’re having Moving Sales. Which means I can buy random stuff to review for cheaper than I would normally–and makes me almost as happy as Back-to-School sales. One of the pens I bought to test out that I probably wouldn’t have otherwise, is this week’s review–the Schneider Xtra Document 0.6mm rollerball with black ink.
This pen is a solid pen. It has a fun pattern to the barrel. The body is a black and silver checkerboard pattern with black and yellow accents around the logo. The clip is wide, metal , and runs the full length of the cap, which is a full 2.5″ long. The pen itself is 5.5″ long capped and just over 6″ with the cap posted. Now the pen cap does not click when its posted, but it’s one of the most secure caps I’ve dealt with in a long time. In fact, it posts so well, I’m half afraid I’m going to pull out the end plug when I pull the cap off.
The grip is ergonomic rubber and comfortable. It has clear plastic holes in the grip so you can see ink through the grip. And the point is ribbed plastic for extra comfort. The diameter is good and feels fairly well-balanced.
The Schneider Xtra Document pen does have a smooth ink flow. I didn’t see any skipping or glopping. The ink is dark and rich. BUT…it’s the thickest 0.6mm line I’ve ever seen. I am used to a 0.6mm line being much more fine than this turned out to me. And that’s the biggest drawback. I want my 0.6mm to not feel like a 0.8mm or thicker line.
Now to the numbers.
1. How does it work? – 0.5 – It works fine. Smooth flow. Solid line. But I feel like the point size is misrepresented. The point feels bigger than a 0.6mm.
2. Grip and feel – 1 – This is solid. The pen fits in my hand. Had good action. The cap might post a little tightly, but I’m not going to knock off for that. It’s comfortable and secure.
3. Material – 1 It’s plastic. It’s meant to be disposable. It is what it is.
4. Overall Design – 0.5 – It’s a decent body design. It’s decent ink. I just can’t get over how thick the ink line is. And that’s a thing for me.
5. Price Point – 0.5 – They run a bit more expensive than say Pilot or Pentel. They’re $2-$4 a piece depending on where you go. I can’t quite remember how much I spent because they were on sale. And they’re not nearly as easy to find as Pilot or Pentel.
3.5 out of 5 bronze pencils.
