[Writer Post] Choosing New Equipment – Chairs
So we’re in the market for a new desk chair for me. Last night we went to the major players–Office Max, Office Depot, and Staples. Sat in a lot of chairs. Scared a couple of salesmen, I think, and have come to the conclusion that chair shopping is much like car shopping. And just as painful.
We bought inexpensive task chairs at Target when we got married – five years ago – and they’re starting to wear out. Because they’re inexpensive, light use chairs. Jimmy acquired a “new to him” chair that meets his needs. It was time to start looking into mine – because I have actually been working from home for a while now (with some exceptions) and need something…better.
Because let’s face it, desk chairs are important. They are almost of equal importance to computers. If you have the wrong chair, it can mess up a lot of stuff and keep you from being productive. I know I have a ton of “chore typing” ahead of me because after a while I need away from the computer/desk.
After three stores, I was completely overwhelmed by chairs. You’d think it wouldn’t be that difficult, but it is. We kinda need optional arms because of the way our office is built, but now that I have a desk tray, that’s not as big of an issue. Do I go leather or cloth? In jeans (which I don’t wear as often in the house) I felt like I was slipping out of a couple of the leather chairs. How many tilt/adjustment options DO I need or want.
I’ve kind of narrowed it down to two, but after discussion our initial need to NOT have chair arms has changed, which means maybe starting over. But that just makes me…sad, because it means starting over and trying out ALL the chairs…again. And while I know there’s no such thing as THE PERFECT CHAIR, I have to be okay with the choice for probably another five years.
So…after finding both finalists online – the reviews are pretty even (if you add up the reviews for one chair which comes in gray or black). Which doesn’t help. There’s always one or two people that hate everything. I have one quite on sale Mesh and Fabric chair with a little less tilt adjustable features, but with flip up arms that felt pretty good at Office Depot. The other is a leather “managerial” chair with all kinds of adjustments but either on or off arms at Office Max for more–but rated for a full 8 hours at Office Max.
As I am a comparison shopper, I am now dithering to the point that I’m sure Jimmy just LOVES. I’ll make a decision soon…I think. 😎
