Most people who know me, know me for two things: my love of coffee and my love of pens. There are more, but let’s go with that for now. For Christmas, I received several pens of all different price points – so it’s time to get back to the reviews. And I’m starting with the Mac Daddy pen gift – the LAMY Studio Fountain Pen with an Extra Fine Nib, might as well start with the “Bang”.
We splurged a little on Christmas and got some NICE writing instrument (not stupid expensive, but not cheap). I love fountain pens and have been curious about LAMY, but haven’t forked over the cash. They’re NOT cheap. This one was all right. My LAMY Studio is the Studio Black with the polished nib – model L67 – ordered from JetPens.com.
The LAMY Studio L67 has a matt black finish with a tasteful logo near the top of what I call an “art deco” clip. The metal grip, clip, nib and accents are shiny stainless steel giving the pen a sleek look. The pen body itself has some heft to it – without being too heavy to write with. It’s well-balanced, and even without cushion on the ergonomic grip, it’s comfortable to write with. The pen comes with one blue ink cartridge and a Z36 ink converter.
The blue ink is rich and vibrant with a long-lasting cartridge. I’ve used it to write out this initial review draft and a lengthy journal entry and have barely made a dent in the ink levels. Which is both good and bad – good in that the ink cartridges are a good value. Bad in that I desperately want to try my Noodler’s Heart of Darkness ink in it through the converter, because I truly think this pen will pretty much only carry black ink from now on. It calls out for black ink to go with the motif, and I will (eventually) oblige. And I don’t have photos of it. Sorry.
The stainless steel nib is one of the nicer ones I’ve written with. It’s smooth. It glides across the paper without skipping or scratching. It lays down a consistent line, the LAMY ink doesn’t feather, doesn’t bleed through the paper and is only really visible THROUGH the paper when the paper itself it cheap (I’ve used it now on a couple different notebooks and pads – I’m quite happy with it). It’s a well-performing pen that makes me want to win the lottery so I can play with some of LAMY’s other pens and inks – there’s a vanishing point fountain pen I’ve got my eye on for when I sell something BIG. 😎
LAMY has made a convert out of me. I was sticking with Watermans for some of my “nicer” fountain pens – Parker, Preppy, and Pilots for others. But if the Studio is a true indication of what LAMY does, I’m sold. I give it 4.9 Bronze Pencils (which will round up to 5) with the .01 taken off for the fingerprints on the grip. But hey, nothing’s PERFECT, right? Though this LAMY comes close.
