[Pen/Pencil Review] The Giant Christmas Novelty Ball Point Pen – Love, Mom

Posted by reudaly on December 5, 2011 in Review, writing instruments |

‘Tis the season to be jolly. This week I’m reviewing a novelty Christmas pen. My mother gave me – as a joke – one of the Giant Christmas Ball Point pens you can get for $1 at any CVS, Walgreens, RiteAid or any other like retailer. This pen comes from Greenbriar International out of Chesapeake, VA. Can’t find a link to this silly thing – at least through Greenbriar.

First off, I have to say…THIS is the “largest” pen I now own. This puppy is nearly 11 inches long. The FINGER GRIP is 2.75″ long. The click top diameter is a full 1 inch across. If it weren’t a joke pen, it could probably be used as an Occupational Therapy pen…it’s just that big.

It does have a basic – probably 1.0mm – writing point. It has a good retracting mechanism…IF you don’t take it apart to look at the innards. I did that. Now I can’t get it put back together properly (another function/side effect of it being freakin’ BIG). But when I did test it out, it wrote pretty well for a really cheap novelty pen. It wasn’t the worst ink on the planet, and not by far the best. It was a basic, $1 ball point pen.

The first question I had when I showed it to people was… “Is it filled with candy?” Um… no. Unfortunately, there is no hidden treasure to this thing. Sometimes a pen is just a pen. I wouldn’t use this for any length of time, it’s just too big. But for silliness’s sake? It’s awesome.

Just for funsies, I give this 2 out of 5 bronze pencils. There’s nothing long term about it, but it deserves some credit for being goofy.
