[Writer Post] Holidays, Technology, Gremlins, and Writing
I’m running late at the end of this year. I totally spaced that today (being my 2nd day at work this week) was actually Wednesday and a post was due. D’OH! I started one in the notebook about a “year in review” type post. Then I was distracted by my (apparently) new tradition of having weird technological gremlins for the holidays. Even now, I’m slowly going crazy as I wait for my iPhone to complete the world’s longest re-sync.
For all that I love doing things “old school” and low-tech, there’s no way to avoid technology. And when that technology goes bad, it takes time and energy to deal with. Which is one of the many reasons I freely admit I have not accomplished as much as I would’ve liked with my writing year. My goal for 2011 (I don’t do resolutions) is to not only WRITE more – but to COMPLETE more. Heck, I just need to keep up, too.
That doesn’t mean I haven’t accomplished anything this year – I have. Stories and projects have come out. Others have been submitted. Networking and marketing were done – conventions attended. I’ve done my job as a writer – I just need to be doing that job with a bit more of the “efficiency” I now do my Day Job. That’s the goal for 2011 and every year after that. I have projects that MUST. BE. COMPLETED. I must corral the Plot Bunnies and make them work for ME. I’m not their trained monkey.
Hopefully this year will see less drama (or at least some less stressful drama) than 2010 in order to make good on my goal. I know we have at least one major stressor coming up in the First Quarter of 2011 – so, hopefully I can take that into account. I’m rooting for routine this year. The Day Job is currently stable (though after the last two years, I don’t know if I’ll ever really shed the mild paranoia of being out of work again). Technically I’ll have been there a year next Tuesday – though my “hire” date isn’t until April. So, so far so good.
Therefore, I leave you now – on this last Wednesday of 2010 – to try to get something accomplished before this year (heck, this EVENING) is out and while the phone is syncing ever so slowly (and we find out if we need to thunk Apple Geniuses in the head). Have a happy and safe New Year. I’ll see you in 2011.
