From the Archive – FenCon V
See I told you this went back a couple of years… I debated about adding this one, but an archive is all of them, and it fits with talking about Soonercon earlier this week.
Enjoy…
FenCon V is rapidly approaching. FenCon V runs October 3-5, 2008 in Dallas, TX. It is the largest fan-run, literary Science Fiction convention in the state. It supports authors, artists, musicians, and fans of all areas of SF – including fantasy and horror.
This year it also has the honor of celebrating 50 years in Texas SF fandom. In 1958, Dallas hosted the first SF convention with a young man as part of the volunteer staff. That 18 year old was Gregory Benford, and now, 50 years, a Ph.D., and several awards later, is FenCon V’s Guest of Honor.
FenCon has made a name for itself in SF literary fandom for boldness in approaching top names in the industry for their Guests of Honor, toastmasters, and to lead their writer’s workshop. They have even talked at least one artist out of convention retirement to participate, they welcome Real Musgrave as FenCon V’s Artist Guest of Honor.
With a strong focus on literary endeavor’s, FenCon supports all avenues of Science Fiction. They sponsor a short story contest, put together a short collection each year with new and reprint stories, articles, or lyrics by not only the current year’s Guests of Honor but also a stellar selection of regional panelists.
FenCon, not only throws one mean party of a convention, the organizers are thoroughly involved with fandom in the region. They support the other area conventions as much as their own. Which is why FenCon is not only in the Heart of Texas but in the hearts of area fandom.
FenCon V’s Guest of Honor roster includes: Greg Benford, Real Musgrave, Doris Egan, Jay Lake, The Weird Sisters, and Howard Waldrop. If you are in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, please come support a fabulous convention and fandom at the Addison Crowne Plaze on Midway road. Registration opens Friday, October 3 at 11 AM.
